Apologies for the rather laconic post last night but the good news is all the selections came in (and it's a long time since I've been able to say that...)
My Petra opened 15/8 on course and was backed in to 5/4 favourite. In a race that lacked pace for much of the trip I was concerned My Petra would be done for toe up the home straight but the selection asserted just before the last and had four lengths in hand over market-rival Blaeberry (2/1) at the line.
In the 3.00 7/2 was freely available about the selection ten minutes before the off. Pettifour and Mobaasher were eventually sent off 3/1 joint favourites and the two fought out a thrilling finish. Although Pettifour had travelled well throughout the race, he looked something of a sitting duck as Mobaasher loomed up large on the bridle coming to the last. A quick jump helped Pettifour and in the run to the line the Twiston-Davies trained horse won the day by a neck. This loooked a good performance by a horse who will surely jump a fence one day.
5/2 favourite State Of Play won the Charlie Hall a length from last year's winner Ollie Magern. He was entitled to do so, with a 16lbs pull in the weights, but it was a tough battle, with the ultra-game Ollie Magern (6/1) leading from the start to within the shadow of the post. It was interesting to hear connections say afterwards that former Hennessy winner State Of Play doesn't take a lot of racing ( - he certainly didn't last year). I'll monitor plans but I'm left with the feeling that today was the plan and I won't be too easily tempted to play up the winnings on this horse.
