Welsh National thoughts
A very quick post on tomorrow's Welsh National at Chepstow where twenty are set to face the starter at 2.10 provided the course passes the 8.00 am inspection. Grand National winner Mon Mome heads the weights - the going is reported as soft, heavy in places. A colleague asked me for an opinion a week or so ago - my two against the field are Lucinda Russell's Silver By Nature ('We go there with a serious chance', Weekender 16-20.12.09), priced up at 11/1 with Coral this evening and Philip Hobbs' Kornati Kid ('Great big horse, who could be very good this season if he gets lucky', Racing Post, 19.10.09), priced up at 16/1 by William Hill.

Both eventual winner Dream Alliance (20/1) and second Silver By Nature (14/1) pitched on landing as they jumped the last; the former was three or four lengths to the good at the time and managed to get away from the fence quickly. He maintained his lead to the line, although the runner-up was eating up the ground in the shadow of the post and went down by a fast-diminishing three quarters of a length.
The winner came from the same stable as the other selection and had the look of the second string before the off with Tom O'Brien in the plate. In the event, a couple, including Kornati Kid, didn't look as though they had taken the preliminaries particularly well -there was a long enough delay while a soloist sang the Welsh National Anthem in front of the stands. Richard Johnson had his feet out of the stirrups on KK and there was a hint he wouldn't start; he jumped off with the others but was a spent force on the second circuit and was pulled up three out. Of the eighteen eventual starters, ten completed on heavy ground that was just about raceable; unsurprisingly top weight Mon Mome was one of the two withdrawn on the day.
